Dear Hope: Will My Friends Understand My Crush

Dear Hope,dating
I have a crush on a girl at my school and I think she likes me too. We started talking when our teacher partnered us up for a project. I have no one to talk to about this, because I don’t think my friends will understand. I’m black and she’s Hispanic. I don’t care, but they’re always saying that they would only date black girls. I don’t agree, but it still has me questioning it. What will everyone think? Do you think it’s ok?
– Different

Dear Different,
It’s exciting you have a crush. Double exciting that she might like you too. That is what matters.

If you like this girl, go for it.

This is not your friend’s decision. It is YOUR decision. As an individual, you get to choose who you date.

I don’t how your friends will react, but don’t assume they will have a problem with it. Let them know you like her just like you would tell them about anyone else. If they’re good friends they will be supportive.

Healthy relationships are built from attraction, trust, honesty, respect and support for one another. They are not about skin color, background or friends approval.

Decide what is right for you. Don’t be influenced by someone else’s preference.

Thank you for being brave and sending in your question.

Our Favorites October

Let me start off by saying a great BIG THANK YOU!

Thank you for all of the birthday wishes. It made my day so special!

Now on to October.

Happy October! We hope it’s been faBOOlous so far!

We love this time of year! We have to admit we are big fans of Halloween. We love the tricks and treats, dressing up, and eating candy. What’s better than that?

As the daughter (Gabriella) I grew up getting to wear tons of DIY costumes made by my mom (Veronica). Most of them worked, but sometimes they just made us laugh. When I was four I was an unmovable butterfly. That’s right. Unmovable. The costume was so big and stiff I could hardly walk and definitely couldn’t move my arms. Hey, it was still cute.
Lots of love,

Gabriella’s Fav Treat: Pumpkin everything! Come on, admit it. We all love the pumpkin stuff.

Gabriella’s Fav Costume: DIY Cookie Monster costume. This costume is the cutest (and it looks easy). You need to check it out. Totally brings me back to my childhood. Cookie Monster is the best.

Our Fav La la la:

Our Fav Bite: Silly Apple Bites. We are so making these. Oh yeah, they’re also good for you. Go check out how easy these are to make.

Dear Hope: Should I Change Classes?

Dear Hope,high school
I was accepted into a higher level course at my school this year and I love it. The problem I’m having is the group I hang out with. They keep making fun of me. They laugh and act like me being in this class is a bad thing. I’m starting to think maybe I should change classes. Maybe I should go to the counselor and tell her it’s too much for me. What do you think?
– Laughed At

Dear Laughed At,
Congrats on your achievement!

Here is what we think.
You should do what is best for you. Don’t let the group stop you from your goals. If you’re happy and you love it, then stick with it.

It would have been nice if they had been more supportive, but don’t let that get to you. When they say something negative about it, proudly say that you like the class. I think once they realize it’s important to you, they will stop saying anything.

Never give up on your path for anyone. If they don’t get it, that’s on them.
You should be very proud of yourself!

Thank you for being brave and sending in your question.
